This is an explanation of the "story" I wrote, A Fire Keeper's Love Story. If you want to read the story first, go here.I believe Astora is a place of worship because Solaire and the knight at the beginning, Knight of Astora, both come from there. Solaire clearly worships Gwyn and the Knight of Astora talks about the old saying in his family about the Chosen Undead and his pilgrimage from the Undead Asylum to the land of Ancient Lords. This story passed down in his family is also why I believe the man in Astora was raised to become Undead and make the pilgrimage. The fact that Anastacia believes so deeply that her tongue is impure resembles the brainwashing of a cult, which makes me believe the woman are raised to become Fire Keepers to serve the Gods.
I think Anastacia initialy did not want to become a Fire Keeper and instead followed her loved one on his pilgrimage because we see her in the opening scene of the game kneeling next to a corpse. Her clothes also suggest to being a Maiden Set, worn by traveling maidens, that was dirtied by travel. I think the corpse she’s kneeling over is a loved one because of how she caresses his face, and I think he was killed by Gwyn because of the embers that are floating around and because the surroundings seems to be all ash. Also, the description of her clothes mention being darkened by smoke and ashes from the bonfire over the years, but she's not near the bonfire in Firelink Shrine so how could her clothes have been darkened by that bonfire? I think it was darkened because of the ashes in the Kiln of the First Flame where her loved one died. Her leaving her Fire Keeper duties to travel with her loved one would also explain why she is maimed in a cage. I imagine she must’ve said something to offend the leader of the Warriors of Sunlight covenant because her tongue was cut off and because of the fact that Lautrec is after her.
Now, Lautrec was a big mystery to me for quite some time. I couldn’t figure out why he would give a Sunlight Medal to the Chosen Undead after he frees him, but also drop a Souvenir of Reprisal after the Chosen Undead kills him in Anor Londo. Both are items from different covenants. I came to the conclusion that Anastacia must have sinned and Lautrec was given a Sunlight Medal for helping a member of the Warriors of Sunlight covenant. Why the Warriors of Sunlight? Because it’s the covenant of Solaire and he’s from Astora. I then had to figure out what sin she could’ve done. The one that made most sense was angering a covenant leader by doing something against their approval. This action that angered the leader is the same that got her tongue cut off. Then, once Lautrec kills Anastacia, he gets the Souvenir of Reprisal, which is the item of the Blades of the Darkmoon covenant, the covenant that kills sinners.
The part about the Chosen Undead fighting Lautrec and reviving Anastacia is simply what happens in the game when you follow this questline. The last thing I presume is the fact that Anastacia thanks the Chosen Undead for accepting to link the Flame. She says “Finally, the curse of the Undead will be lifted, and I can die human.” I think she’s relieved at the idea of being able to die human because then she’ll be able to join her loved one wherever they go when they die instead of being an eternal Undead and turning Hollow.
