A Kingdom of Flesh and Fire introduces a lot of lore surrounding the Ascended and the Atlantians. As Casteel and Kieran answer Poppy’s multitude of questions, we learn at the same time as her about the history of the Ascended and the Atlantians. Poppy tries to understand how she feels towards everything she’s learning and towards Casteel himself. Having already fallen for him before learning who he was, she feels like she’s betraying herself and Vikter and Rylan if she accepts Casteel and keeps loving him. But, the attraction is so strong between them, that they innevitably become intimate again on multiple occasions.
I really enjoyed this book. It was really fun learning all these things about the Ascended and the Atlantians. Some of the information answered some questions while others just brought on more. I really enjoyed her chemistry with Kieran. How they would tease each other as if they didn’t like one another. I also found it extremely funny every time Poppy would start asking questions to Kieran and he would just already be done with the conversation. I was very frustrated at Poppy and Casteel’s interactions though. I knew they loved each other, but neither one of them wanted to admit it. Casteel because he thought he didn’t deserve her, and was probably only reflecting what Poppy was throwing at him. And Poppy because she felt like she would betray everyone if she did love him. Every time Casteel would ask Poppy to just pretend, it would break my heart. I was so happy when they finally talked it out and accepted their feelings for one another.
As far as what Poppy actually is, I had my suspicions throughout the book. I knew she wouldn’t be just half-Atlantian. There was something more to it. The fact that she smelled and tasted old and how the wolvens would feel a kind of static energy around her or when touching her. Then when she started being able to heal and would glow like the moonlight while doing so, and when the wolven started hearing her call for help in their mind, I knew she was linked to them somehow. It hasn’t been revealed yet how she would be linked to them, unless I just forgot some bit of information, but the twist at the end was simply magnificent. My jaw completely dropped.
Without a single doubt in my mind, this book deserves a big ‘ole 5 out of 5 from me!
