The story starts with a young boy crying at a grave. We see a flashback of the boy in a small boat trying to save what we assume is his mother who’s drowning. Once the flashback is over, the boy goes down to see his brother holding their father and asking for help to put him in a cart. They bring their father to the village doctor and he tells them about a tree that could help their father. They then go on an adventure to get what they need to save him.
It is a wonderful story, entirely told only by the actions of the characters. They don’t speak any known language, and so you have to assume everything from their actions. You encounter different kinds of people during your adventure, helping some, while avoiding the danger from others. Without giving any spoilers, I do have to say the story is heartbreaking. The ending made me cry so much.
I love how, even though you can’t understand what they’re saying, you can still have a sense of the personalities of the characters. The older brother is courageous and protective of his younger brother, but is also a bit naïve. You can also see the younger brother is scarred by what happened with his mother. He’s a bit more fearful and needs the help of his brother at times to move forward.
The gameplay is one of the most interesting thing about this game. I don’t know if any other game has done this, but this is the only one I’ve played that does this. You control both brothers at the same time. The left trigger and thumbstick is to control the older brother while the right trigger and thumbstick is to control the younger brother. It takes some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it’s really fun to control. One of my favorite parts of the game utilizes this mechanic to its fullest. If you forget what controls who and you let go of the wrong trigger, you end up killing the brothers.
This game is definitely up there as one of my all time favorites so I give it a 5 out of 5!
