Clay’s Ark follows the story of Eli, whom we briefly saw in Mind of my Mind. We learn that he traveled to space, but came back with and extraterrestrial organism inside him. The organism forces him to stay alive and spread the disease to other humans. Some survive, some don’t. He creates a small community in the mountains where he lives peacefully, kidnapping man and woman from time to time to infect them when needed. We also follow Blake and his two daughters, Keira and Rane, who are abducted by Eli’s group.
I was a bit disappointed that this book leaned towards the sci-fi instead of staying in the supernatural territory, but it was still an interesting story. I loved how they would switch from telling the present story, Blake, Rane and Keira’s kidnapping, and the story of the past, Eli arriving at the ranch and settling in. It was a great mix of following the action of a family that got kidnapped and getting the mysteries of the ran slowly revealed.
Honestly, I didn’t care much for Blake. He was very stubborn in thinking he would be better off trying to get to a police station or hospital to find a cure even though Meda and Eli both tried explaining it was too dangerous. I understand you wouldn’t want to believe your kidnappers, but other than having kidnapped him and his daughters, they’d been decent towards them. No harm was done. Rane and Keira were perfect opposites of each other. Rane being super outspoken and brave while Keira was more shy. Although, about halfway throught the book, I prefered Keira because she was the most reasonable. As for the group of infected, we didn’t stay much with them enough for me to have a strong opinion about them.
I feel like this book deserves a 3 out of 5. I loved the writing style and the story was interesting enough. But it didn’t really catch my interest fast enough. I started really getting into the story only towards the end. It’s not a book I would reread.
