From Blood and Ash, written by Jennifer L. Armentrout, is a story about Penellaphe, a young girl that is very special. She is the Maiden. Although she isn’t quite sure what that means. What she does know, is that being the Maiden prevents her from doing everything she wishes she could do. She’s not allowed to talk to other people, others aren’t allowed to look at her face, she is constantly veiled, she can’t be touched.. All the restrictions are put on her to keep her pure. After having a heated meeting with the new guard, Hawke, Poppy feels more and more trapped in her role as the Maiden. When one of her Royal Guards is killed and Hawke becomes her new Royal Guard, everything changes for Poppy.
The story was simply amazing. The backstory of the land was super interesting and Poppy’s slow realisation that she doesn’t want to be the Maiden was heartbreaking and freeing at the same time. Knowing that everything she was going through was wrong on so many levels but her not feeling like she could do anything to prevent it all from happening was so infuriating at times. But that’s what makes a good book for me! When they make the story and the characters so interesting that you get so invested in what happens to them. I picked up this book because I saw it on Booktok and got immediately curious. It’s my first dip into the spicy books genre and it couldn’t have been more perfect. There was less spice than what I thought there would be, but it was the perfect level to introduce me to the genre.
The characters were all amazingly written. I even bawled my eyes out when Rylan died and we’d barely known him. My heart completely shattered when Vikter died. I laughed so much at the teasing between Hawke and Poppy. The way Hawke could make any situation a moment to tease Poppy was simply the best. My three favorite teases was when Hawke found out Poppy was fighting Cravens on the Rise and told her to wear better shoes and better clothes next time because the clothes would be the death of him, then there was when they were fighting Craven in the Blood Forest and Hawke said he never thought he would find something sexy about Cravens but watching Poppy fight them was sexy, and lastly when Poppy was in the middle of fighting him and he said he was aroused by that.
I give this book a big 5 out of 5. The story is perfect, the characters are amazing, and I can’t wait to read what happens next! I am quite frankly in love with Poppy and Hawke!
