This story is happening centuries after Clay’s Ark. We are now in a world where Clayarks, the decendents of Eli’s children from the previous book, and the Patternists are at war. Meanwhile, the only humans without powers, mutes as they call them, are enslaved by the Patternists. We follow Teray, a young patternist just out of school, although he should’ve been out four years ago. We soon learn that he is one of the sons of the current Patternmaster and his previous lead wife, who was his sister. Teray and Coransee, both being direct decendants of the Patternmaster line, are the strongest of his children and the most possible heirs. Even though Teray assures Coransee he doesn’t want the Pattern, Coransee forces him into slavery or death. Teray manages to leave with a strong hearler, Amber, and they try to make their way to Forsyth to plead with Teray’s father.
I really enjoyed this story. It was shorter than I would’ve liked it to be, but I feel like the story Octavia E. Butler wanted to tell was told. Knowing she wrote this book first and then went back to write the backstory of the Patternists and the Clayarks somehow made this book even more interesting. Seeing where her ideas started and having read what they later became was so much fun. With how Teray was turning, I was really curious on how he would lead the Pattern and wanted to see if he would make changes to the rules concerning the mutes. Sadly, I’ll probably never get an answer to that, but I am still very happy with this book. Like I said, even though I would’ve enjoyed more, I feel like this book told the story Octavia wanted to tell. It feels complete.
There were very little characters compared to the other books. The main ones were Teray, Amber and Coransee. There were two others that were important in the beginning, but quickly became irrelevant. It made it possible to really get to know the main characters and see their personalities. It also made it possible for me to get attached to them. Well, not Coransee, but Teray and Amber haha.
I definitely give the final book of the Patternist series a 5 out of 5. Very interesting story full of action with amazingly written characters.
