The Guardian - Book Review

The Guardian, by Erin Lee, follows the lives of Alvis and Rae as they train to become the best Pact. In this world, there are Drakons, dragons that use gemstones to access their power and dragon form, and then there’s the Guardians and their Charges. Guardians, the dragons, and Charges, the humans, make a Pact which enables the Guardian to use his powers by taping into his Charges’s energy. Rae used to be a Drakon, but when a tragedy happened, he found himself in prison and Linless, the rebels, broke him out so they could use him to be in the best Pact and deliver everyone from Zen’s reign. Alvis, a Chosen One, has super strenght and, after living a tragedy of his own, decides to be Rae’s Charge to take revenge on Zen.

I just completely fell in love with the story. Who wouldn’t when you have dragons involved! But not just this, everything is so well explained and detailed that you can’t help but support their cause and get invested in the outcome. There are also so many characters to fall in love with. All the different Pacts they befriend. We don’t learn a lot about their backstory, but just enough to get invested in them as well. I can’t even choose favorites because they’re all just so unique and loveable in their own way! Zaile is so funny in her interactions with Rae when she helps him understand Alvis. Lamont is always so serious, but you can tell he cares about the boys with how he reacts to their dumb antics. Tal is like a smart child. He sometimes acts super childish in his excitement, but he also knows when it’s okay to ask certain things and when to stop the conversation. Aella is a bit recluse, but opens up so much when Tal is around. It’s super cute. And to top it off, the two of them are complete badasses in the battlefield! There’s also Princess Meera and her Charge Luca. We haven’t seen much of them, but still just enough to make me curious to learn more about them.

Alvis and Rae are puzzles of their own. Alvis, being a Chosen One, had to hide his super strength all his life when all he wants to do is learn how to control it better. Everybody keeps saying how Alvis is a super simple guy, not at all complicated, but I’m not sure it’s entirely true. He doesn’t shy away from saying what he thinks, but he does have a tendancy to bottle his own emotions and focus on making others better. As for Rae, he is a hot mess. But who can blame him with what he’s been through. I did find myself super frustrated at him when he would just block Alvis out and not even try to talk to him. It did make the moment he finally opened up that much better though. I’m super happy for him that he’s finally learning to let Alvis in and deal with his trauma. I also love that he keeps awkwardly trying to be supportive to Alvis, too, since he’s also lived through a tragedy. They are simply the cutest together, whether they stay just friends or become more in the following book(s).

I definitely give this book a 5 out of 5! I cannot wait for the sequel!!!
