We follow Reig and Trad, twin brothers working at the Octunnumi, as they try to uncover the secrets of the most recent mystery. It starts off pretty simple with the reappearence of a former agent, Nate Fosbit. He claims to have no memory of his previous lives, even though Regens are supposed to remember. He has brought with him a picture of a group of children that have been thought to be dead. As Reig and Trad start to try to solve this mystery, they learn that their operatives on Fethrist have started disappearing. They then have to start investigating this and the rest of the book is a big domino effect from those investigations.
The story was a bit hard to follow at times, I do have a lot of questions. I understand this is simply the prologue, but I wish they would’ve explained a bit better who the missing children are. They seem to be very important to the Octunnumi, but it’s never explained why. Also, other than saying they thought they had gotten blown up, there’s not much detail about why they were with the person that supposedly blew them up. Maybe they’ll get more into that story in future books. It might not be important information either, just some backstory. Other than that, there was a lot of information to take in about how the Octunnumi works and learn all their lingo. Good thing there was the definitionarys included with the book!
Other than those small details, the story of the prologue was really interesting. I was not expecting so much action for a prologue. It IS a full book, so they had to include a lot of stuff, but if this is the level of action we get in just the prologue, I can’t wait to read the next book!
The characters were amazing. I loved the dynamic between Trad and Reig. Everyone was so well described and everything they did fit so well with their personality. I really got sucked into caring for all of them. Even the simplest of character that wasn’t seen much was just so loveable. There were so many moments that made me laugh, but probably my favorite was at the end when Maiegryn was scolding the boys for not calling her, their mother, before going against their commanding officer’s (also her) orders.
This book is definitely a 5 out of 5 for me!
