I learned something when I finished reading The Vicomte of Bragelonne. As I was reading and seeing how much of the book was left, I was wondering how the story would end. It didn’t feel like the story was close to its conclusion, but I only had 4% left of the book to read! When I reached the end, that’s when I got the answer to my question. The Vicomte of Bragelonne, the whole story, is actually seperated in four books: The Vicomte of Bragelonne, Ten Years Later, Louise de la Vallière and Man in the Iron Mask. Because each parts is the length of an actual novel, I decided to review each parts seperately because there would just be too much story to review at the end if I waited. So here’s the review of The Vicomte of Bragelonne.
The story follows mostly D’Artagnan again, but we sometimes read the point of view of somebody else in connection with what D’Artagnan is doing. We’re also slowly introduced to new characters, which are more connected to Raoul, our future protagonist I think. D’Artagnan’s first adventure begins with him giving his resignation from the musketeers. He decides to do so when he gets an idea of how to make a lot of money fast and easy. His idea sends him off to England in a plot to help Charles II reclaim his throne. His second adventure of this book brings him back in the service of king Louis XIV. This adventure sends him to Belle Île to investigate if M.Fouquet has been fortifying his island without Louis XIV’s knowledge.
Once the adventures were taken off I was into the story. I was super intrigued as to how his mission would end. Sadly, it took so long for those missions to start that I often lost interest while reading and needed to reread paragraphs because I wasn’t paying attention to what I was reading anymore. D’Artagnan’s character became really interesting in this book. Because of his age, he probably in his fifties, he knows what he wants and doesn’t feel like waiting around for it to happen on it’s own anymore. He knows he doesn’t have much time left to live and decides to take manners into his own hands and make his fortune happen.
I am going to give this book a 3 out of 5. The main plot points of the story are interesting, and, like I said, once the adventure has begun it’s very engaging, but the parts in between are simply boring. I hope the other parts of this story are more interesting.
