Twenty Years After - Book Review

Just like the title says, this story happens twenty years after The Three Musketeers. Our four musketeers are all in their corner of France doing their own thing until Paris goes in civil war. Sadly, our friends are seperated by their personal views and two of them are Mazarinists while the other two are Frondists, but they decide to remain friends and simply not talk politics while they’re together. They are sent on different adventures to serve their respective leaders, one of those adventures sends them to England, each with a different objective. They come back to Paris just in time for the denouement of the civil war.

This story was a bit harder to get into than the first book. I think it’s because I was so against the actions of D’Artagnan that it made it hard for me to continue reading. The only parts I really enjoyed were the ones where the four friends needed to work together to get to their objectives. There were also new characters to follow, their story not always interesting either.

Like I already mentionned, I did not like D’Artagnan’s choice of side in this book. I also very much hated Mazarin’s character, which I suppose might have been the point so good job author! There’s also Raoul, Athos’s son, that we followed for a bit. We didn’t learn much about him, just a bit of backstory, but I’m curious to see what will happen to him in the next book.

All in all it was a pretty average book. The story wasn’t bad, but it wasn’t very much captivating. For that reason I will give this book a 2 out of 5.
