Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them - Movie Review

Set in 1926 in the Harry Potter universe, the story follows Newton "Newt" Scamander as he arrives in New York City. He carries a magical suitcase filled with magical creatures. One of them escapes and in his attempts to get it back, he meets a No-Maj (non-magicals) named Jacob Kowalski. Jacob escapes him before he's able to wipe his memory and Porpentina "Tina" Goldstein arrests him. They find out that Jacob accidentaly took Newt's magical suitcase instead of his own and as they try to find him to retreive the suitcase and wipe his memory, they learn he's opened the suitcase and a few magical creatures escape. Newt then enlists Jacob's help in getting back the creatures while a much darker plot is brewing in the background.

I really enjoyed this story. It was so lighthearted and funny while at the same time having an aspect of the story being super serious and dark. I really loved seeing all the beasts inside Newt's suitcase. The CGI was so well done! The best I've ever seen probably. They all looked so real. SPOILER WARNING I was extremely sad at the end, though, because they needed to erase Jacob's memory. The one thing that I found strange, was that they introduced us to Grindelwald at the beginning of the movie, but then it was like they completely forgot about him throughout the rest of the movie. SPOILER OVER

The characters were really well made. We didn't have much of a backstory to them, but they managed to tell just enough and show the rest by how they acted and they were all just fitting perfectly with their role. I'm really curious, though, to see more of Grindelwald in the next movie. At least, I'm guessing we'll see more of him since the title of the movie is about him.

I'm definitely giving this movie a 5 out of 5. It was funny, mysterious and it made me cry a little at times. The special effects for the creatures were perfectly made, which helped to stay focused on the story and not feel disconnected by some bad CGI.
