In the last season of the Lucifer series, Lucifer is faced with the realization that he might not be as ready as he thought to be God. As he is facing those doubts, we are introduced to a new angel who claims to be Lucifer's daughter from the future. He decides to put his coronation on hold as he tries to figure out why he hasn't been in his daughter's life. While Lucifer is dealing with all of this, we have the ghost of Dan who tries to figure out why he's not going to heaven and Amenadiel who battles with the unfairness shown by the cops towards black people.
SPOILER ALERT
There were so many things happening in this season. It felt a bit rushed. As if they had all these story ideas but were forced to squish them into one season. Staying with one season left, I would've prefered if they had focused more on Lucifer being God instead of doing the whole plot with his daugther from the future. It's never a good idea to play with time loops. It almost always leaves the viewer with so many questions. In my opinion, they could've kept the beginning of the season the same; with Lucifer questioning if he'll be a good God. Then they could've made him God and as he made mistakes after mistakes he'd slowly figure out that he wasn't meant to be God and give the throne to Amenadiel.
While all of this was happening, they could've also focused a bit more on Dan and why he wasn't going to heaven. I feel like the denouement of his storyline was also rushed and didn't make sense at all. I understand the guilt he felt about leaving his daughter and feeling like he hadn't been a good father. But did he really need to go inside his killer's body to realize his daughter thought he was a good father? And how in the world did he manage to change clothes and get to the park where his daughter was without being noticed?
And now the whole storyline with his daughter from the future was badly ended as well. I liked the idea of Lucifer not being around while she was growing up and him trying to find out why. What I didn't like was how they ended it. The whole time loop problem. "If you don't abandon me and mom you'll never realize you need to help the souls in hell get to heaven!". He easily could've popped in and out of hell whenever he wanted to see Chloe and his daughter. Amenadiel does it and he's God! But no, if Lucifer does this then he'll actually never help the souls in hell. It just doesn't make sense because the time loop had to start somewhere. Originally, Lucifer never would've abandoned Chloe and his daughter, so what made the time loop start? And why can't he break it? What happens if he decides to not abandon his daughter? Is time just going to erase itself and he'll just forget he decided to help the souls in hell? We don't know exactly how time loops work. The show could've decided that this Lucifer would break the time loop and things could've been fine. But they decided to make him go against his character and abandon Chloe and his daughter.
This season felt very disconnected with what we knew about the characters. Lucifer would never have abandoned his daughter, so the whole time loop storyline doesn't make sense. Chloe seems so weak this season. Clinging to Amenadiel's necklace to have super strength because she feels vulnerable without her gun. They never hinted at this problem in any of the previous seasons. It comes out of the blue. Also, she just abandons Trixie during this season. They give the excuse that she's at day camp, but she's still planning on leaving her alone since she was thinking of going to heaven with Lucifer. And why is Trixie still in the dark as to who Lucifer actually is? They also completely threw her aside this season. She isn't even there when Chloe is on her death bed! Does she know her half-sister is half-angel? They never tell! The only character that made sense this season was Ella. Having to deal with the trauma of her ex being a serial killer, not feeling God's presence anymore and researching the apocalypse. I was heartbroken when she found out the truth. I never understood why, when everyone found out one after the other the truth about Lucifer, no one told her.
SPOILER ALERT OVER
I'm going to have to give this season a big 'ole 2 out of 5. Some parts of the story were fine, but most of it just didn't make sense and felt rushed. I hate that the series ended this way. It had so much potential.
