A young orphan girl, Beth, learns how to play chess from the janitor and with the help of some pills the orphanage gives them. The janitor is so impressed at how good she becomes that he calls over the leader of the chess club from a nearby school. The man, also quite impressed, asks Beth if she would be willing to come play against all the guys in the chess club at the same time. After this event, she gets adopted and manages to participate in an actual chess tournament. When her new mother learns of the money she earned winning the tournament, she lets her miss school and travels with her to all the tournaments and Beth eventually makes a career out of playing chess.
I honestly thought the story was boring. I really wanted to like it because I'd heard everyone loved it and it had made so many people want to play chess. But I just couldn't get into it. I watched the entire season, hoping it would get better, but it didn't. I just ended up watching seven episodes of a girl playing chess. The only time I was actually slightly interested was when she faced the champions. The one part that I really enjoyed, was at the end when everyone gathered to help her win her last game.
Beth's character is really not developed enough. The only things we know about her is that she's an orphan, she's addicted to drugs and alcohol, she's socialy awkward and she's really good at chess. She's always studying chess books so she doesn't socialize with anyone. If it doesn't have to do with chess, she doesn't see the point of doing it.
I sadly really didn't enjoy watching this show, like I said, it was mostly boring and I did not like Beth's character. But since there were a few moments that I enjoyed, I will give it a 2 out of 5.
